Who Sarah Is For You
Sarah believes that teaching yoga is a sacred service to humanity and is committed to a loving environment in her classroom that encourages personal growth. Students know that when they practice with Sarah, they will have a challenging practice informed by her innate understanding of the body and her depth of knowledge in yoga philosophy. Sarah's students know that she is committed to the roots of yoga and where we stand in the lineage, while preserving a lightness of spirit. They expect humor and good cheer in the midst of a strong, focused asana practice. When a student rolls out their mat for Devotional Flow with Sarah, she or he knows that he will be seen and acknowledged and welcomed back.
About Sarah
Sarah is a 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher (E-RYT 500, YAECP) who has practiced and studied yoga since 2002. She has been teaching since 2007 after she received her 200-hour certification from Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in New York City. She later went on to get her 500-hour certification from Yogamaya, also in New York City. Between my trainings and since my certifications, Sarah continues her studies with her primary teachers Christina Sell and Constance Braden. She has also studied with Abhijata Iyengar, Gioconda Parker, Stacey Brass, Bryn Chrisman, Manorama, Professor Edwin Bryant, Jason Crandell, Carrie Owerko, and Patricia Walden among others.
Before committing her life fully to teaching yoga, Sarah had a long career in the higher education publishing industry that gave her many rich experiences and insights. She moved back home to Houston from NYC in 2008 and enjoys being in her hometown close to her family. Sarah became Sarah Montross (formerly Martin) last summer when she married her best friend Vern. They have a son and daughter, two cats, and a pug named Mo (@therealslimpug). Sarah is one of the original teachers at BIG and has been teaching Devotional Flow since it opened.
What Sarah's Students Say
I came to yoga like most men: my back hurt, and my doctor suggested it. What I have now after 7 years practicing with Sarah Montross is a new prescription for life. Sarah’s teaching is alignment based and injected with real-life philosophical inquiry. But her style, imbibed with wise-cracking humor, makes you want to read the sutras, learn mantras, and study all aspects of this ancient practice. Yoga is so much more to me than exercise now; it’s become an ongoing class on life.
